Located to the north-west of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle International Airport (NCL) is well connected to the city by road, with the A696 running right past the airport and the London to Edinburgh A1 running nearby and into the city itself.

Newcastle Airport is lies between both the Ponteland Golf Club and the Westerhope Golf Club. Also nearby, East Brunton and Longbenton are located to the east of the airport, while Woolsington and Newburn lie directly south.


Directions to Newcastle International Airport (NCL) from the north of the city:

  • Take the A697 or A1 from the north and merge onto the A1 south
  • Turn right at the A696 junction and join the A1 Newcastle bypass
  • Continue north-west on the A696 for about 3 km / 2 miles until you see Newcastle International Airport on the right hand side

Directions to Newcastle International Airport (NCL) from the south of the city:

  • The London to Edinburgh A1 highway provides access from the south
  • Turn left at the A696 junction and join the A1 Newcastle bypass
  • Drive along the A696 north-west for about 3 km / 2 miles, turn right into the airport compound

Directions to Newcastle International Airport (NCL) from the east of the city:

  • Take the A194, A184 and the A167 west from the South Shields area
  • Bypass Newcastle to the north on the A167
  • Cross over the main A1 junction onto the A696 north-west and continue until you reach the airport on the right hand side

Directions to Newcastle International Airport (NCL) from the west of the city:

  • The A69 heads into Newcastle from a westerly Carlisle direction
  • Before you reach Newcastle, turn left (north) onto the B6323 and follow the signs for the airport
  • Turn left onto the A696 and then right into the airport compound

Roads in and around Newcastle get busy during the morning and evening rush hours, beginning at 08:00 and 18:00 respectively. In particular the A1 bypass, the A167 running through Newcastle and the A696 heading towards the airport can get congested. It is advisable to allow extra travel time if driving to Newcastle International Airport (NCL) during these times.
